.... RM35 Juta Untuk Terbit Akhbar Milik Negeri? | AAKJ

GEORGE TOWN: The state government has spent RM35.94mil on its newsletter Buletin Mutiara since 2010, says Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

He said since the bi-weekly publication made its debut that year, a total of 32,732,029 copies have been distributed.

“The cost covers publication, printing and transportation,” Lim said in his reply to an oral question by Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhammad Farid Saad during the state Legislative Assembly sitting last week.

When contacted yesterday, Muhammad Farid said the newsletter was a waste of money. “It is not well distributed and is not well received by Penangites.

“I have not seen anyone actually reading the newsletter but I’ve seen it being used as nasi lemak wrap and waste paper,” he said.

According to Lim, there were 17 journalists working for the newsletter, with four employees each in the Bahasa Melayu, English language and photography departments.

“We also have three reporters in the Chinese language department and two more in the Tamil language section,” he said.

In his written answer to Lee Khai Loon (PKR-Machang Bubok), Lim said that from 2013 to April this year, the state spent a total of RM29mil to promote its policies.

Besides Buletin Mutiara, he said, the state publicised its policies through billboards, booklets, flyers, banners, video presentations and advertisements.
